Former Google Domains user?
Squarespace acquired Google Domains in 2023. Your domain has been automatically transferred to Squarespace Domains. These instructions are exactly what you need — log in at account.squarespace.com/domains.
What you'll do
Squarespace has a clean Custom Records interface. You'll delete any preset Squarespace website records (not email!), then add three records: a CNAME for www, an A record for the root domain, and a TXT record to verify ownership.
1
Log in to Squarespace Domains
- →Go to account.squarespace.com/domains and sign in
- →Click your domain name to open its settings
- →Click the "DNS" tab or link
If you were previously on Google Domains, you're now on Squarespace Domains — Squarespace acquired Google Domains in 2023. These instructions apply to you.
2
Delete Squarespace Defaults (website records only)
- →Look for a section called "Squarespace Defaults" near the top of your DNS settings
- →Delete any A records or CNAME records that point to Squarespace's servers (e.g., ext-cust.squarespace.com or Squarespace IP addresses)
- →Click the trash icon 🗑️ next to each one and confirm
- →If you don't see a "Squarespace Defaults" section, skip this step
IMPORTANT: Do NOT delete any records with Type "MX" — those are for your email and are unrelated to your website. Only remove the A/CNAME records under Squarespace Defaults that point to their website hosting.
3
Add the CNAME record for www
- →Scroll down to the "Custom Records" section
- →Click "Add record"
- →Set Type = CNAME
- →Set Host = www
- →Set Data = sites.servicepromagic.com
- →Click Save
TypeCNAME
Hostwww
Datasites.servicepromagic.com
After saving, you should see the www CNAME record in your Custom Records list pointing to sites.servicepromagic.com
4
Add the A record for the root domain
- →Click "Add record" again
- →Set Type = A
- →Set Host = @ (the @ symbol means your root domain)
- →Set Data = 34.41.24.195
- →Click Save
TypeA
Host@
Data34.41.24.195
This A record handles visitors who type yourdomain.com (without www) — it directs them to your site automatically.
5
Add the TXT verification record
- →Click "Add record" one more time
- →Set Type = TXT
- →Set Host = _servicepromagic
- →Set Data = the verification code shown in your ServiceProMagic dashboard (starts with "servicepromagic-verify-...")
- →Click Save
TypeTXT
Host_servicepromagic
Dataservicepromagic-verify-xxxxxxxx (from dashboard)
This record proves to us that you own the domain. Find your unique verification code in your ServiceProMagic dashboard under Domain Settings.
6
Verify in your dashboard
- →Go back to your ServiceProMagic dashboard
- →Click Domain Settings
- →Enter your domain and click "Verify DNS"
- →DNS changes typically take 5–30 minutes (up to 48 hours in rare cases)
Frequently Asked Questions
"What are Squarespace Defaults and should I delete them?"
→ Yes — these preset records point your domain at Squarespace's website builder. Delete any A records or CNAME records under the Defaults section that point to Squarespace servers (e.g., ext-cust.squarespace.com or Squarespace IPs). Don't delete MX records.
"I used to have Google Domains — does this apply to me?"
→ Yes! Squarespace acquired Google Domains in 2023. If you were on Google Domains, you're now automatically on Squarespace Domains and these instructions apply.
"Will this affect my email?"
→ No — do NOT delete any MX records. Only delete the A/CNAME records under Squarespace Defaults that point to their website hosting. Your email (Google Workspace, etc.) runs on separate MX records that won't be touched.
"I don't see a Squarespace Defaults section"
→ That's fine — it means your domain was already customized or transferred in. Just add the three records (CNAME, A, TXT) directly in the Custom Records section.
"What does the A record do?"
→ It handles visitors who type yourdomain.com (without www) — they get automatically directed to your full www site. Unlike GoDaddy or Namecheap, Squarespace doesn't have a "Forwarding" section, so we use an A record instead.
"It's not working — how do I check?"
→ Visit dnschecker.org, enter your domain, select CNAME from the dropdown — confirm that www resolves to sites.servicepromagic.com. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate globally. Still stuck? Email support@servicepromagic.com.
